Transitional Era

I have an ever growing interest in the era when steam power gradually took over from wind and oars as the dominant form of nautical locomotion. I consider the "transitional" era to start in the 1840s with the first installations of steam engines in wooden ships, and to last until the "pre-dreadnought" period starting in the 1890s, when warship designs had settled into a few relatively standardized design patterns.
